Imagine standing amidst a desert landscape, yet being able to gaze out at the sparkling blue sea, all while soaking in the breathtaking views of majestic mountains. It sounds like an impossible dream, doesn't it? Yet, surprisingly, Vietnam is home to just such a wondrous destination...
Imagine standing in a desert, gazing at the blue sea, and being immersed in majestic mountain scenery – it sounds impossible, right? Yet, Vietnam truly has such a magical place…
For many, deserts conjure images of endless sand dunes and harsh climates. Most people believe these are places only suitable for resilient creatures like camels or cacti. The geographical distance also often makes them challenging to reach.
However, if you've always dreamed of exploring a desert, there's good news for travel enthusiasts: Vietnam is home to its very own 'mini-desert.' This is Mũi Dinh, located in Ninh Thuận province. With its pleasant climate and stunning landscapes, Mũi Dinh has earned a spot on many travelers' — especially young adventurers' — must-visit lists.
Discovering Ninh Thuận's Famous 'Mini-Desert'
Ninh Thuận is a region characterized by a significant amount of arid terrain. The vast, sprawling sand dunes are a result of grasslands gradually undergoing desertification (also known as semi-desert landscapes). Yet, it's precisely this ingenious transformation by nature that gives Ninh Thuận such an impressive highlight.
Many visitors say Mũi Dinh reminds them of the Sahara Desert, with its wide, endless sand dunes stretching to the horizon, dotted with only a few sparse plants swaying in the hot wind. On Mũi Dinh's 'mini-desert,' you'll find massive rocks, some weighing hundreds of tons, forming unique natural artworks untouched by human hands.

The constant strong winds continuously shift the sand, causing the dunes here to always appear wavy and change their shapes in fascinating ways. This is why Mũi Dinh is often described as constantly transforming its appearance even within a single day. According to locals, if visitors come during all four seasons of the year, they will observe even more distinct differences.
Despite being a semi-desert, this 'sand field' is not as barren as many might imagine. Aside from cacti, travelers exploring the area can still encounter lush green plants thriving in the sun. You might even spot vibrant green grass carpets at the foot of the sand dunes, where local residents graze their sheep. The sight of white sheep leisurely munching on grass further highlights the wild, nomadic lifestyle of this region.

The 'Mini-Desert' Is Not as Barren as Many Imagine
Beyond walking, visitors can opt for an off-road vehicle to explore Mũi Dinh's 'mini-desert.' Driving across the rugged terrain and white sand paths is an incredible experience. As you traverse each dune, you'll feel a rush of excitement and thrill, with many people shouting in pure joy as they embrace the freedom of desert life.
There are several off-road vehicle rental services available here, with prices ranging from 800,000 to 1,600,000 VND depending on the vehicle type and usage duration. Nam Cương and Sơn Hải are smaller sand dunes within Mũi Dinh, chosen by most visitors for this experience. Additionally, as the sun sets, visitors can enjoy the exciting activity of sandboarding.

Journey to Mũi Dinh
Mũi Dinh is a cape located in Phước Dinh commune, Thuận Nam district, Ninh Thuận province. It lies 30km south of Phan Rang - Tháp Chàm city center and 80km southeast of Ngoạn Mục Pass (Sông Pha Pass). Due to its remote location, the road leading here is quite challenging and rugged. The area is largely uninhabited, allowing it to retain a rare, pristine wilderness.
Visitors have several transportation options to reach Mũi Dinh. Among them, buses and motorbikes are the most accessible, convenient, and popular choices. If traveling by bus from Saigon to Phan Rang, the journey takes approximately 6-7 hours. It's advisable to choose an overnight bus departure to arrive early the next morning. Bus ticket prices currently average around 160,000 – 200,000 VND per person.

If you wish to conquer Ninh Thuận's most scenic routes independently, a motorbike is an excellent choice. For a motorbike adventure, you can follow this route:
From Saigon to Phan Rang, travel approximately 15 km along National Highway 1A until you reach Văn Lâm Cham village, then turn left. Continue through the bằng lăng (lagerstroemia) area for about 8km until you reach Đại Bàng mountain peak. Drive another 7km to Sơn Hải. From here, you can either drive directly into the desert or park your vehicle at a local's house; Mũi Dinh peak is just 1km away. Currently, there are parking facilities and vendors selling snacks and drinks in this area, making it quite convenient.

This Super Scenic Coastal Route Will Surely Not Disappoint Adventurers
Another route to Mũi Dinh offers incredibly beautiful coastal scenery: the road along Cà Ná beach. After passing Cà Ná lagoon, visitors will turn onto DT701 road to reach Mũi Dinh. However, be aware that this route has many twists and turns, so drivers need to stay focused and ensure they have a steady hand if they choose this path.
As mentioned, Mũi Dinh captivates visitors with its pristine beauty and vast, expansive landscapes. Many travelers even remark that Mũi Dinh embodies all the most distinctive characteristics of Ninh Thuận, like a vibrant landscape painting stretching out to the immense ocean – wild yet offering a sense of peace. In 2020, Mũi Dinh was chosen as one of the main filming locations for two movies:“Nomad's Footprints” (2014) and “Red Sand” (2020).

To fully appreciate the beauty of this place, visitors should plan a summer trip between April and June. Due to its coastal proximity, winters here can be colder and windier. If you wish to experience the unique festivals of the indigenous Cham people, consider visiting Mũi Dinh between August and October each year, which is grape harvest season (the Mbăng Katê festival takes place from the 1st to the 7th day of the Cham calendar annually).
Nearby Attractions for Visitors to Explore
In addition to Mũi Dinh, visitors can explore several nearby attractions in Ninh Thuận to make their trip even more complete.
The Century-Old Lighthouse
A journey to Mũi Dinh, Ninh Thuận, would be incomplete without conquering Mũi Dinh Lighthouse. This ancient lighthouse, perched atop Mũi Dinh mountain, is over a hundred years old. Standing 170m above sea level, it was built by the French in 1904 entirely from sturdy granite. With a light range of approximately 30 nautical miles, Mũi Dinh Lighthouse is not merely a nighttime beacon guiding ships from Phan Rang to Tuy Phong; it's also an impressive historical architectural marvel.

However, the path to the lighthouse is quite steep and challenging, making the walk relatively strenuous. Although the distance is just over 1km, many people have given up. To make the journey less arduous, it's best to go early in the morning or late in the afternoon when it's cooler.
Ms. Thảo Vân shared her experience: “The path was steep, tiring, and very hot. I had to stop and rest dozens of times before reaching the top. However, once I arrived at the lighthouse, all my fatigue vanished because everything was simply amazing. The vast yet peaceful natural scenery, the salty taste of the wind between the expansive sea and sky, truly made me want to stay there forever.”
A Dip at Bãi Tràng Beach

After traversing the desert area, visitors will reach Bãi Tràng, with its expansive white sand dunes and clear blue waters. This small, pristine beach, located directly below the lighthouse, boasts calm, beautiful seas and open spaces perfect for overnight camping and BBQ parties. Besides swimming, visitors can also arrange with local fishermen to take photos with their basket boats or rent kayaks to paddle freely amidst the waves. Overall, it's a perfect blend of majestic mountains, vast sandy desert, and the boundless ocean.

Alisa, a visitor from the UK, shared: “Mũi Dinh, Vietnam, is incredibly beautiful. The scenery is pristine and peaceful. The food here is also delicious and affordable, perfectly suiting our taste. If I get the chance, I will definitely come back!”
