Hon Yen is a captivating collection of scenic spots that draw visitors to Phu Yen.
Phu Yen boasts over 189km of coastline, numerous lakes, bays, islands, and offshore island clusters, featuring over 300 hectares of coral reefs and more than 504 hectares of seagrass beds and seaweed, primarily concentrated in Song Cau Town, Dong Hoa Town, and Tuy An District. The province's wetland areas cover approximately 488,600 hectares, with bays spanning about 14,685 hectares, lagoons about 4,225 hectares, and roughly 2,000 hectares of tidal flats connected to three major river mouths. These areas provide food for marine life in the coastal waters, contributing to the rich diversity and abundance of aquatic species.
Hon Yen Island was formed by tectonic activity, most notably volcanic eruptions, resulting in cylindrical and hexagonal basalt columns. Hon Yen Island is located approximately 400m from the shore and covers an area of nearly 2 hectares. The Hon Yen complex is identified as including Hon Yen, Hon Dun, Ban Than, Ganh Yen, and Vung Choi, forming a truly unique natural scenic landscape. The Hon Yen coral reef complex spans about 30.2 hectares, with soft corals being predominant. Due to their close proximity, Hon Yen and Hon Dun offer visitors a picturesque and romantic seascape.
The Hon Yen scenic complex is located in Nhon Hoi Hamlet, An Hoa Hai Commune, Tuy An District, about 15km north of Tuy Hoa City. In April 2018, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism recognized it as a national scenic spot.

Hon Yen's cliffs feature many fascinating layers that combine to create a stunning natural landscape between the sea and sky. Hon Yen is a geological marvel, a 70m-high cylindrical basalt island with hundreds of reddish-brown and black hexagonal rock columns running along vertical and oblique veins, formed by volcanic activity millions of years ago. Geologists believe that a phase of geological tectonic activity, similar to the one that formed Ganh Da Dia, created Hon Yen.
Visiting Hon Yen in early summer, when the tide recedes, travelers can stroll along a wide rocky beach that reveals a 20m-long path connecting Hon Yen and Hon Dun. Beneath the clear blue sea, Hon Yen's corals, in all their shapes and colors, look from a distance like peacocks dancing to the vibrant rhythm of the ocean. Small schools of fish begin to appear, leisurely swimming among the coral reefs. With a keen eye, visitors might also spot sea cucumbers, sea urchins, and starfish clinging to the beautiful coral formations. This is considered one of Vietnam's rare coral reefs.

Beneath the clear blue sea, Hon Yen's corals display a myriad of shapes and colors.
According to local residents, in ancient times, swallows (yến) frequently nested here, giving rise to the name Hon Yen (Swallow Island). Furthermore, Hon Yen also resembles a giant sea sail, symbolizing the local fishermen's tradition of venturing out to sea and preserving their peaceful fishing village. Viewed from another angle, Hon Yen looks like a spear with its sharp tip pointing upwards, characteristic of rock, water, the ocean, and the harmony of creation.
For a community tourism experience, visitors can now explore Hon Yen and participate in activities such as: kayaking to visit the Hon Yen complex, discovering coral areas, lobster farming zones, Ganh Yen, Hon Dun, and Lo Chao; admiring the Hon Yen complex from above with a walking tour along the hill paths; visiting swallow's nest farming and fishing net weaving with local fishermen; and most importantly, enjoying the natural scenery and the rich seafood flavors prepared by the local people.

Youth volunteers launched a beach cleanup campaign to protect the Hon Yen ecosystem areas.
Recently, a delegation from the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, led by Minister Dang Quoc Khanh, conducted a field survey of the Hon Yen coral reef ecosystem protection area and the Ganh Da Dia special national scenic spot in Tuy An District, Phu Yen Province.
During this survey, Phu Yen provincial leaders requested the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment to provide attention, funding, and technical support for establishing the Hon Yen Wetland Conservation Area, focusing on landscape protection. Phu Yen is currently collaborating with UNESCO Vietnam to conduct a re-survey in accordance with the 2020 Environmental Protection Law, aiming to join the Global Geoparks Network. The province has requested specific guidance from the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment on this matter.
Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Dang Quoc Khanh acknowledged the province's comments and recommendations and urged Phu Yen Province to continue protecting coastal ecosystem areas, especially the Hon Yen coral reef complex and the Ganh Da Dia special national scenic spot.
